Why You Need Celery Juice In Your Life - Recipe (Without a Juicer), Benefits & My 1 Month Experience
Celery is one of the most powerful foods on the planet, offering amazing anti-inflammatory properties, vitamins and the capability of starving unproductive bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, and viruses that are present in the body. Celery juice has been shown to purify blood, remove toxins, increase energy, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, help with migrains and skin problems and prevent cancer. Most notable, celery juice increases low hydrochloric acid (HCL) levels in the stomach, thereby healing digestive related issues. I made Medical Medium celery juice (without a juicer) and enjoyed it first thing in the morning everyday for 1 month and noted my experience.
Celery - A Nutrient Powerhouse
Celery is packed with tons of nutrients including Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and C and rich supplies of folate, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and essential amino acids. Need beta carotene, flavonoids or phytonutrients? Celery juice has it.
Celery contains powerful mineral salts yet to be discovered in science or research that help to balance the body’s pH and rid toxins from the body. It's like a whole body power wash, cleansing and removing debris from every corner.
Celery Increases HCL
Hydrochloric Acid (HCL), also known as stomach acid, helps to break down the foods we eat. Unfortunately, when chronically stressed or suffering from disease, HCL production decreases. If you experience IBS, constipation, bloating, brain fog, acid reflux or digestive discomfort, chances are that HCL levels are low. When this happens, the digestive system is not able to fully digest or absorb the nutrients from the food we eat.
Luckily, when consumed regularly, celery juice can help to gradually increase and restore the stomach’s HCL levels, thereby improving digestion and healing and preventing disease.
The Medical Medium
After a visit with my funtional medicine doctor, I found out I had hypothyroidism, high cortisol levels, multiple food allergies, low stomach acid, adrenal fatigue, sluggish liver and hypertonic kidneys. I was also experiencing bloating, insomnia, inflammation, water retention and stomach pain. I came across the Medical Medium's book, Thyroid Healing, and discovered the powerful healing properties of celery juice. He writes the following:

We tend to hold a lot of fear in our guts. Nervousness causes those sensations we know as tummy flips or butterflies in the stomach, and anxiety can run deep through the nervous system, putting our guts in knots. Celery restores the entire digestive system. Use it for its calm-ing effects when you are feeling frightened, panicky, shocked, fretful, nervous, threatened, unsure, afraid, or defensive.
Needless to say, unless you are 100% healthy and symptom free, celery juice is worth experimenting with!
CELERY JUICE BENEFITS
There are a ton of benefits of celery juice, but I highlighted some of my favorites below.
Celery contains the anti-inflammatory properties polyacetylene and luteolin, compounds proven to reduce inflammation and reduce symptoms and offer relief from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Migraines, Vertigo, IBS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne, Lupus, Guillain-Barre, Sarcoidosis, Raynaud's, Meniere's, GERD, Bursitis, Restless Leg Syndrome, and Gout.
2. PH Balance
The natural sodium in celery raises stomach acid, increasing alkalinity. The amazing minerals in celery are extremely effective at balancing the body’s blood pH. Celery Juice helps to prevent and counteract acid reflux, high blood pressure, joint pain, ringing in ears, hot flashes, blurry eyes, headaches, heart palpitations, edema, etc.
3. Improved Digestion
Remember the importance of HCL discussed above? Not only does the natural sodium balance pH, it also restores stomach acid, the component responsible for digesting food. Most people think if they have heart burn that they need a TUMS or antacid, but contrary to popular belief, it is actually low stomach acid that causes these unwanted symptoms. When food is not broken down and digested, it rots in the intestines, causing bloating and digestive distress. Drinking celery juice helps you digest your food so you have less gas and bloating.
4. Blood Purifier
The sodium in celery maintains the fluidity of the blood and lymph and prevents them from becoming too thick. The vitamins and minerals in celery help to nourish and rebuild red blood cells, aiding those suffering from rheumatism, high blood pressure, arthritis, and anemia.
5. Detox Support
Celery helps with the removal of toxins, reducing the strain on the kidneys and improving bowel function. Celery promotes healthy and normal kidney function by aiding elimination of toxins from the body. While eliminating toxins, it also prevents formation of kidney stones. Celery’s detoxifying properties work to remove bad bacteria, fungi, mold, viruses and other toxins from the liver, helping it to work better and remove toxins from the body.
6. Enhanced Sleep
Celery contains magnesium, a mineral responsible for over 300 enzymatic reactions, including enhancing relaxation of the nervous system and calming and soothing the body, helping you ease into sleep and stay asleep. Celery also has a balance of electrolytes that decrease stress in your body, making it also great for the adrenal glands.
7. Post Workout Recovery
Celery juice is a great tonic to have after a workout since it contains electrolytes and minerals that are lost during exercise. It's high water content also restores hydration.
8. Lowers Blood Pressure
It has been shown that drinking celery juice consistently helps lower blood pressure. It contains a compound called phtalides that help relax the muscle around arteries, dilating the vessels and allowing blood to flow normally.
Celery contains anti-cancer compounds, including acetylenics, that has been shown to stop the growth of tumor cells. Celery Juice also contains phenolic acids that work to stop the compounds that encourage the growth of tumor cells. Last but not least, the vegetable juice contains properties that keep free radicals from damaging cells.
10. Healthy Skin
The vitamins in celery juice can help skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, and rosacea. The Vitamin K content can increases the skin's fimness and elasticity while other vitamins help improve skin tone, remove wrinkles and lighten age spots.
How to Consume Celery Juice
I read the best way to consume celery juice is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. So, for 4 weeks, I started my morning with 16 oz. of straight, freshly juiced celery. You want to always make the juice fresh and drink it immediately so it doesn’t oxidize. Then, I waited 20 minutes before drinking or eating anything else. The time allows the celery juice to do its magic and prime your body for optimal digestion and detoxification.
Please note, it can take time for your digestion to adjust and rebuild the mineral salts that will improve your health, so start slowly! If you need, start with 2 oz. and work your way up. Your body will let you know how much you can tolerate.
My Experience Drinking Celery Juice Everyday for 1 Month
I started drinking celery juice to try to help my low stomach acid levels. Prior to the celery juice, I had been taking 5 HCL tablets before every meal. It took 6 HCL tablets to even feel the normal burning sensation. Once I introduced celery juice, I noticed a huge improvement to my overall digestion. Instead of the post-meal bloat and feelings of over fullness, I felt like I could continue with my day and activities without cramping or feeling sick. I have been amazed at how much my digestion has improved in only 4 weeks.
To my surprise, I noticed improvements in other areas as well. Most noteworthy are:
Less cravings for salty foods
I was able to relax, fall asleep and stay asleep
Improved mental clarity
I felt like I was recovering better from workouts
Balance. Maybe due to the highly alkaline nature of the juice? I am not sure, but everything seemed to be more in balance.
I have loved the results so far and excited to see how the next few months play out drinking my green juice every morning. Below you will find the recipe on how to make celery juice without a juicer! Please enjoy!
A recipe for celery juice without a juicer. Simply make it fresh and consume daily, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and enjoy blissful digestion, feelings of zen, and improvements in skin health, sleep, and mood.
Makes: 16 oz celery juice
Prep time: 5 minutes
1 bunch organic celery*
1/4 cup filtered water
Vitamix or High-Speed Blender
Wash and rinse celery stalk. Chop off the end and cut celery into small pieces. Do not discard of the leaves, since they contain amazing nutrients and vitamins.
Place celery and water into blender and blend until smooth.
Pour blended celery into a nut milk bag placed over a bowl and squeeze and twist the nut-milk bag until you get all the juice out. You will be left with dry celery pulp in the bag. Discard of the pulp.
Pour into your favorite glass, sip and enjoy!
Notes: *Use organic celery whenever possible since celery is on the dirty dozen list, meaning it is heavily sprayed with pesticides and chemicals. If using conventional, soak in water and scrub well.
