You may have heard the Bulletproof Coffee buzz swarming around instagram or the internet. If not, feel free to read more about it here. In short, bulletproof coffee is a blended coffee recipe using grass-fed butter or ghee and brain octane oil. In my Powerhouse Bulletproof Style Coffee recipe, I put my own spin on the classic bulletproof coffee.

What is Matcha?

Matcha is an extremely concentrated powder that has almost 10x the nutritional and antioxidant content of brewed green tea. It is rich in antioxidants, fiber, and amino acids that can help calm the mind, boost energy and metabolism, detoxify, and prevent heart disease. This Bulletproof Matcha Latte provides the same sustainable energy and focus as coffee, but without any jittery feelings.

The addition of collagen peptides and adaptogenic herbs make this latte a delicious and healthy way to start your morning.

What are Adaptogens or Adaptogenic Herbs?

Adaptogens are herbs that essentially help the body "adapt" to a state of homeostasis. Each herb has its own unique qualities, so I often rotate which ones I use. My favorites are ashwaghanda, astragalus, chaga, cordyceps, reishi, and rhodiola rosea. You only need a little bit—approximately 1-/4 to 1/2 tsp at a time.

Ashwagandha

Aswagandha is one of the most well known adaptogens. It has been most studied for stress reduction. Ashwaganhda is a super antioxidant known to decrease anxiety, improve sleep, nourish the thyroid, balance hormones, decrease bloating, and combat cravings. It can also reduce the effects of mental, emotional, and physical stress. UPDATE: I had my functional medicine doctor muscle test ashwagandha on me and I do not tolerate it right now. Do not take an herb or supplement just because you see that other people are.

Astragalus

Astragalus promotes circulation, assists in the anti-aging process and elevates mood. It can help strengthen metabolism, immunity and give you energy.

Chaga

Chaga is a mushroom derived adaptogen. It is great grounding and anti-inflammatory herb that supports the adrenal glands, slows the aging process, supports the immune system and digestion. Meanwhile, it also stimulates the liver, cleansing and elevating it out of sluggishness and awakens the thyroid, improving its function. Chage is perfect for easing anxiety, stress and feelings of nervousness, making it a great  herb to take before a stressful test or flight.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps is another mushroom-based anti-aging, ant-inflammatory, disease-fighting adaptogen. It is great for maintaining good liver and kidney function, reducing symptoms of respiratory disorders, coughs and colds, and may support oxygenation of the body, mental power, athletic endurance, and muscle tone.

Reishi

Reishi, also in the mushroom family, is best known as the ultimate "queen healer" or balancing adaptogen. It supports the cardiovascular system and soothes the nervous system. It is used to regulate blood sugar, counteract general fatigue or weakness, and promote feelings of calmness, making it a great herb to take before bed. It’s important to note that because reishi is a mild adaptogen it needs to be taken over a longer period of time to get the full benefits.

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola is a get things done kind of adaptogen. It's great for boosting productivity, balancing blood sugar levels, protecting the heart from stress related damage, and boosting the immune system. I would not recommend taking rhodiola too late in the day because it can lead to insomnia. It is also important to cycle your use of rhodiola, such as in 1 month on/1 month off or 5 days on/2 days off.

This recipe makes two matcha lattes. You may cut the recipe in half for one matcha.

Bulletproof Matcha Latte

Matcha is the powdered form of green tea leaves with antioxidants and amazing nutritional benefits. This Bulletproof Matcha Latte provides energy and focus without the jittery feelings from coffee. The addition of adaptogenic herbs helps bring our bodies gently back into the state of balance necessary for well-being.

Makes: 2 matcha lattes
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 1  minutes

Ingredients:

  • 32 oz water or unsweetened dairy-free milk

  • 2 teaspoons high-quality ceremonial grade matcha powder

  • 1 tablespoon MCT Oil Powder or coconut oil

  • 1 tablespoon coconut butter*

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1-2 scoops marine collagen or favorite collagen peptides brand

  • (optional) ½ teaspoon cordyceps

  • (optional) ½ raw honey

Instructions:

  1. Heat water or dairy-free milk on the stovetop or in a milk warmer until it reaches 170°F. Do not use boiling water, as it will alter the taste of the matcha. I linked my all-time favorite matcha brand uner 'Shop This Recipe' below, but this is another brand of matcha I enjoy that is a little bit cheaper.

  2. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend on low speed for 1 minute. Then, increase speed to high speed and blend for 15 seconds.

  3. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy immediately!

Notes: *Coconut butter makes this matcha latte extra creamy; however, you may substitue with more MCT powder or coconut oil if you wish!
